Head, thorax, abdomen....

Head, Thorax, Abdomen....

That's a song we learned in Four Winds. Four Winds is an awesome place based, science, hands-on- nature program led by wonderful parent volunteers. Thank you!

The month of September had a perfect theme- INSECTS!

We did a mini unit on insects as the kiddos came in and loved the insect science table. We learned about the life cycles of a butterfly and even had our first ever class pet. RIP polka-dot. He was going to be some kind of moth, but he didn't do so well in our terrarium. We did love watching him for the few days that he spent with us!

During four winds, we began with a puppet show. Then we did a movement activity- like head & shoulders, only using the parts of the insect. Next, students worked together to put together the parts of an insect made of felt, and finally we went on an insect hunt! We didn't have much luck catching insects, but we did find an abundance of cute little frogs. Catch and release of course.....

We also did some great science work in our science journals.

Next of my favorites- The Decomposing Pumpkin. Stay tuned.....

Here are some pictures from our insect unit. Enjoy!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Hello Friends and Families,

This week we have been focusing our learning around Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

Using this text- we are learning the days of the week, doing a lot of work with our classroom calendar, studying the beginning-middle-end of stories, practicing retelling skills and studying the science behind butterflies. So much FUN!

Today, we made our own hand print caterpillars. They're pretty cute!

Kindergarten is in full swing!

We are on day 10 of developing our daily routines and working hard every day to develop stamina and self control.

We have three workshops daily in Kindergarten: Readers Workshop, Writers Workshop and Math Workshop. A workshop is a time for us to build skills we need to become successful. Each workshop begins with a whole group mini lesson and is followed by centers relating to the skills we are learning. Most of these centers are play based encouraging students to build both social and academic skills.

Here's whats going on in our workshops this week!

Math- Shapes! Sorting, counting, drawing, etc.

Readers workshop- Reading our friends names, writing our own names, and learning about what readers do.

We are working hard in Kindergarten.
Thanks for checking in!

Wow! School is back in session and I am armed with a group of 19 five year olds ready to go! What a fun, busy, excited, challenging, humorous, eager group of kiddos we have in Kindergarten! I am so excited for the adventures we will take this year. Here are some highlights from the first 4, yes 4, days of kindergarten! Enjoy!

We've made new friends!

We play outside!

We do projects!

We read!

We have fun!

The sixth graders presented a bouquet to each kindergartner last week as a welcome to MCS! We will return the favor at the end of the school year as we wish them well on their journey to MAUHS!

Exciting Events

Hi Folks,

I just wanted to take a minute to update you on the exciting events that Kindergarten has participated in lately.

I'll keep it quick....

CHAMP came to visit. There will be an MCS goes to the Lake Monsters night in July. It sounds really fun. Champ came to promote the idea...

We had a special show and tell last week! Elise brought in her family's new baby chicks! So cute and chirpy! We had fun playing with them!

We've been studying habitats. We've done some great work around studying birds of Vermont. We did a hike through the woods and around Monkton Pond to search for birds! We saw some! Thanks to Sam Davison and Doug Hartwell who volunteered time to come help the entire Kindergarten class of MCS build birdhouses to take home! This week we'll be looking closer at pond life and life cycles. Science is awesome!

Four Winds- I forgot to mention our last 4 Winds theme. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. We made paper! So cool! The kids loved getting messy and taking home the final products.

Oh Yeah, Kindergarten also visited the Fine Arts Festival at Mt. Abe High School last week. We were lucky enough to see a great (and funny) clown performance, see OUR ART WORK in the gallery, and spend time in the planetarium! Thank you to parents who came along!

Have a great week everyone!
