Family and Friendship

Over the months of February and March we have been, and will continue to study and celebrate family and friendships. The main ideas of this unit are that all families are different, you have families at home and at school, and there are characteristics that make a good friend.

We of course kicked off our celebration of friendship in our classroom with a Valentine's Day Celebration. Students brought valentines from home, made mailboxes, read names of friends, distributed valentines and of course we worked together to make a friendship fruit salad.  Yum! We love our friends in Kindergarten.

This week we will begin our big book project. Students are creating their own big books about their family at home. Students books will be acordian style books in the shape of a house and each page is devoted to something about their family. We plan to have an authors tea party in a few weeks to share our final projects! We work hard in Kindergarten!

On a totally unrelated subject...this week we are celebrating Dr.Seuss' birthday. (March 2) We are participating in an America Reads projects called "Read Across America". Each day, we read a different Dr. Seuss book (did you know he wrote over 40?) and then we learn a fact about a state in our country. We color the state and eventually we will have read across America. Here's our new door- and my Lorax friends!

Happy 100th Day of Kindergarten!

It's been 100 days of fun in Kindergarten.

We've been counting all year, today we celebrated the 100th day of Kindergarten!

Students were asked to create a project or bring in 100 of something. We had museum of 100 and invited our study buddies to the viewing. We even had 100 munchkin donuts as a treat! The kiddos were so proud of their work- I was amazed by some of the creativity!

We also painted 100 footprints using our feet. It was a silly task. Kindergartners loved sliding their feet around in the paint and then walking down the paper! Sorry parents- it might be bath night :)

We also played some 100 math games-100 Tally count, and of course Race to 100. During our literacy time I challenged student to write 100 words. They are so excited to finish this afternoon! That's hard work!

It's been a great 100th day of Kindergarten!

It's been a while...

Hello Folks,

I apologize for not updating the blog for a while....I've been sucked into other projects lately :) Thanks for understanding!

Here's whats new!

This week we went on our 1st field trip to the Flynn Theater to see Skippy Jon Jones. If you don't know the stories, Skippy Jon Jones is a Siamese cat who thinks he's a Chihuahua and has a wild imagination! We have been huge fans ever since we first opened the book and the theater brought our reading to life! We decided we needed to make our own shows so we created "Skippito" puppets! It's been fun!

Did I mention we are addition experts? We've been practicing fluency with addition. Some of the activities we've done lately are domino addition, sorting facts, playing race to 100 for place value, and addition war. We also have included a game called BUMP where you bump other players pieces if you roll two numbers that make the same sum as where their piece is. We are learners!

Today we spent a lot of time talking and learning about Groundhogs and Groundhog Day which is tomorrow. Our weekly magazine was about Groundhogs, we watched a video about groundhogs, and then we did some shadow science with Groundhog puppets. I wonder if we have 6 more weeks of winter coming in Vermont. :)

Have a great weekend everyone!
